Becoming a New York accountant can be the first step to a long, successful and lucrative career.
Qualified Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) in the United States enjoy good career prospects, job security and very competitive salaries.
CPAs are not the only accountants to practice in the US. There are also:
Certified Internal Auditors
(CIAs),
Certified Management Accountants(CMAs)
Accredited Business Accountant (ABAs).
If you are considering a career in accounting in New York then you might consider working under the supervision of a certified accountant. This allows you to carry out accounting tasks without being qualified.
A CPA is licensed to provide auditing services to the public. The requirements to become a CPA vary from state to state but as a minimum you will be expected to pass the Uniform Certified Public Accountant examination . CPA accountants are not limited to audit and can offer a full range of accounting services including tax, litigation support and financial advice.
The CIA qualification is issued the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA), and candidates are required to pass a four-part examination in order to become licenced.
CMAs are often work within companies rather than offering services to the public (although not always the case).
In order to become licenced you will need to pass a four-park examination set by the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA), as well as earn the requisite work experience.
ABAs generally work small-to-mid-size businesses and in financial services to individuals and families. ABAs need to pass a stringent examination, set by the Accreditation Council for Accountancy and Taxation(ACAT). The exam cover a wide variety of topics from financial accounting and reporting, to taxation, business law, and ethics.

For overseas accountants looking to work in New York, you would be expected to hold the following qualifications, or equivalent:
In the United Kingdom,Canada, Australia and several other Commonwealth of Nations countries, the equivalents of Certified Public Accountant (CPA) include Chartered Certified Accountant (ACCA), Chartered Accountant (CA or ACA), Chartered Management Accountant, International Accountant, Certified Public Accountant (CPA - Ireland and CPA - Hong Kong), Certified General Accountant (CGA - Canada), and Certified Practicing Accountant (CPA - Australia).
